What Metal Melts in Your Hand?

Gallium. This real metal melts at just 85.3°F (29.8°C) — below your body temperature — so a solid piece of it slowly turns into a silvery puddle in your palm.

Quick facts

A metal with a split personality

Most metals need serious heat to melt — aluminum needs 1,221°F, iron needs 2,800°F. Gallium is fully solid in a cool room and fully liquid in a warm hand. That strange in-between behavior is exactly why technology loves it: gallium compounds are inside the LEDs lighting your house and the chips running your phone.

Watch, don't try

Gallium isn't mercury, and it isn't considered highly toxic — but it's not a toy either:

That's why our rule is simple: watch it melt, don't grab it.
